Bring your paintings to life with an acrylic paint medium, whether you are a seasoned artist or just starting out, this guide will step you through our wide range of acrylic mediums.

A medium will change the way an acrylic applies, so you can change the texture, drying time and consistency of your acrylic paints, just by adding in something extra.

Acrylic Medium Fluid (gloss or matte)

Increase your creative flow with a gloss or matte acrylic fluid medium. A gloss medium will help thin your trusty acrylic paints and make them more transparent, this is great for creating glazes and stunning watercolour effects.

Or, use a matte acrylic medium as a finishing varnish to protect your acrylic paintings, you can also balance out the natural gloss caused by acrylics by using a matte medium.

Tip: Use varying amounts of product to create different levels of paint translucence and add flow to your next project.

Gel Medium (gloss or matte)

A gel medium will keep the acrylic’s thin texture and give your work a nice buttery finish. Our range are versatile, keep their viscosity (or consistency), dry clear and are available in either gloss or matte.
If glazing is your preferred way of working, you’ll find a gloss gel medium to be your new best working buddy, it will keep your consistency thin but not dilute the pigment, like water will.

Gel Mediums aren’t just for painters, they can also bring to life your collages and craft projects.
The Gloss Gel Medium will increase transparency and add a nice polish and shine to your projects and our Matte Gel Medium will still increase transparency but also lower any gloss, leaving your projects with a smooth and even surface.

Tip: To keep your paint colour and consistency safe, use a ratio of 1 part medium to 4 parts paint.

Acrylic Retarder

Art shouldn’t always be lived in the fast lane, slow down the process with an Acrylic Retarder. This type of acrylic paint medium will slow the speed of your acrylic drying time, which means you will have more time to experiment, blend and play. This medium may change the consistency of the acrylic but will still give your works a smooth coat, especially over larger areas.

Tips: Drying times may vary depending on the amount used and the environment, we recommend to use a mix ratio of 1 part medium to 4 parts paint.

Acrylic Flow Mediums:

So if you’ve mixed up the perfect colour but as you apply it, you discover that it’s too opaque, you’ll want to reach for the Acrylic Flow Medium. This will lock in the vibrancy of your colours and also work to increase your paint’s translucency. It can also be used to turn your acrylics into pouring paints.

You can create stunning marble effects and build up the level of consistency that you’re looking to work with and paint as if you were using pouring paint.

Tip: To create your own DIY pouring paint, mix 1 part acrylic paint with 2 parts of pouring medium and 1- part water.

Impasto:

Enhance your painting’s texture and bring your acrylics to life by using Impasto. This medium can create and hold brush strokes, making it perfect for creating abstract works.

Plus, by mixing in impasto to your colour palette, you can also extend the life of your acrylics as you will use less paint. Whether you choose to mix impasto directly with your acrylics on a palette, or apply impasto first and then paint over, the choice is all yours!

Tip: Pay attention to how this form of acrylic medium is applied as impasto will keep its shape even after drying.

Light Moulding Paste

If you want to add a dash of dimension to your work, try the Light Moulding Paste. It will dry to an opaque, matte finish and hold high peaks, adding interesting effects to your work. This modelling paste can be used on a range of surfaces including canvas and wood and is a lightweight formula, meaning it won’t weigh down your masterpiece.

Tips: Use modelling paste to blend in with your acrylic paints and create expressive brush strokes or abstract palette knife marks.

Crackle Paste:

Add a Crackle Paste to age the look of your acrylic landscapes, or add texture and effect to your acrylic projects. Once this opaque medium has dried, paint can be applied over the top and then used on a variety of surfaces including wood, canvas, even polymer clay.

Tip: For best results, apply crackle paste to a smooth surface, the medium can be tinted once dry, however this can also affect the level of cracks once dry, so it’s best to build up the surface before painting.
