Easy Paint Painting

How to colour match

Let’s dive into making the perfect paint match for your next project! It’s a simple process once you know how, but keeping a colour wheel on hand while you create is a great way to remember the basics.

When it comes to mixing paints, colour theory is super important. Check out your colour wheel and take note of your warm and cool shades, as well as complementary colours. Tip: you can mix a small amount of the complementary colour into your chosen shade to neutralise and dull it. This is great for mixing realistic skin tones and earthy colours!

Keep a reference of the colour you’re trying to match nearby, so you can refer back often and compare your mixed colour alongside it. Determine if the colour is warm or cool and if it is more vibrant or neutral. All these factors will influence which colours you mix and how much of each paint you use. For a warm peachy tone, we mixed a warm and cool red with white and warm yellow. Once you find the right combo of colours, dab it onto your reference and see if it blends in!

Nailing colour matching takes practice and patience. Keep refining your colours until you’re happy with them and don’t be afraid to experiment along the way. The best way to understand colour mixing is to try it for yourself and watch how undertones change results up close.
