How to paint graffiti with acrylic on canvas
In this video we show you how to create graffiti style lettering using acrylic paints on canvas. You can check out the lettering outline in the PDF below.
Step 1. Transferring the lettering
Refer to the image on page 6, and use a HB pencil to transfer the lettering as well as you can. You might like to use the grid system to transfer your lettering or you can draw it up directly. Keep any construction lines light. Once the lines are lightly drawn on, refine and darken them. After the lettering is in, create the boxes for each letter.
Step 2. Tinting the canvas
Squeeze out some Sap Green, Yellow Ochre with a touch of Titanium White and Acrylic Medium Gloss. Use the100 mm foam roller to lightly apply a coat over the entire surface. Ensure that the drawing can be seen beneath the coat of paint. If the paint is too opaque add more medium.
Step 3. Adding the colour
For guidance with colours you can use the printout on page 7 although on a project like this, feel free to use a bit of your own artistic licence.
The colour mixes used are below and all mixed from Dimension Acrylic.
It is a good idea to have a test canvas coated with the green background colour to test any colours and make adjustments until you are happy with the colour.
Refer to the accompanying video for guidance on where to place the colours. The colours used are below:
1) Grey: Titanium white, Phthalo Blue and Lamp Black.
2) Beige: Neutral Grey, Medium Yellow, Titanium White and Brilliant Red.
3) Coral: Naples Yellow, Titanium White, Lemon Yellow and Carmine.
4) Mauve: Mauve, Titanium White and Phthalo Blue.
5) Red: Brilliant Red.
6) Purple: Magenta, Titanium White and Carmine.
The last colour [6] is a purple for the boxes of each letter shape.
Step 4. The black key line. There Is a key line around the lettering that can be laid in with Lamp Black. Create a thin mixture from Lamp Black mixed with water in a 1:1 ratio and apply it with a Rigger Brush.
5. Add highlights
Create a mix of 2 parts Titanium White to 1 part of water and lay this onto the right side of each letter element with the Rigger Brush. This step is easy to understand on watching the accompanying video.
Step 6. Add the outline
Use the white mixture to create an outline around the lettering. Let this dry and create a mix from 2 parts Medium Yellow to 1 part water and lay this colour over the white line just laid down.
