Small chalk paint project for little artists

For an easy project on a weekend that’ll make learning fun, try out this small chalk paint project.

For an easy project on a weekend that’ll make learning fun, try out this small chalk paint project. Not only does this project teach the little ones how to make their own chalkboards, it also teaches them literary and numeracy skills, an important skill for little learners. Watch as they create, learn and have fun making something that can be used time and time again!

Hand holding a graphite pencil and drawing shapes to create a chalkboard design.

Use a pencil to draw a design onto your board before picking up the paints! Think circles, hearts, triangles, rectangles or squares, whichever your heart desires. This will become your chalkboard so be sure to draw the shape large enough for it to become a chalkboard later on in the project.

Hand painting a chalkboard with chalk paint and a roller.

Grab your chalk paint and begin painting your design with smooth, even brush strokes. It’s best to opt for a foam roller for this project so you get a smooth, even finish that won’t cause any trouble to your paint brushes. Make sure your paint covers your whole design then leave it to dry.

You can turn your chalkboard project into a fun literacy or numeracy activity with some acrylic paint. Add some lines using a white acrylic paint for writing activities or shapes for numbered activities. Then leave this paint to dry.

Once the chalk paint has dried, your chalkboard project is ready to use! Have fun drawing with numeracy, or literary activities.

Once you’ve finished with this small chalk paint project, you can wipe your chalkboard clean with a cloth before storing it away. Rinse the foam roller with water to remove any left-over chalk paint.
