Meet Indian artist Purnima Bhardwaj (@palette_full_of_colors), whose fun drawings are jam-packed with bright colours! We wanted to find out all about her creative journey, so we asked loads of questions to find out. Check out Purnima’s insightful and inspiring answers below.
How did you discover your inner artist? Was it a gradual process or a surprise discovery?

I have always been passionate about drawing and sketching, creating artworks often during my school days. However, as my schedule became busier, I had to set aside my artistic pursuits. During the COVID lockdown, with plenty of free time on my hands, I decided to start an Instagram page as a mandala artist. Eventually, my curiosity led me to explore something new, so I dove into various forms of art and eventually discovered my own unique style. As I continued to explore, I found myself drawn to nature-inspired themes. I must say, it was a slow and steady journey.
Do you have any tips for getting better at drawing?
Practice regularly, even if it's just for a few minutes every day. Focus on understanding the basics and experiment with different styles and mediums until you discover your own. Observe and learn from nature, use references for guidance without copying, and draw inspiration from various platforms. Most importantly, enjoy the creative process, be patient, and embrace the journey—improvement takes time.
How do you decide what to draw? Where do you turn for creative inspiration?

I have always had a deep love for plants, which is why they often become the central theme of my sketches. I find inspiration in nature, whether it’s observing plants and trees around me or coming across something intriguing while watching anime or cartoons. Sometimes I get inspired when scrolling through Pinterest or while watching artists create their own masterpieces.
Do you have more of an organised, minimalist home or a bustling, maximalist home? What’s the vibe like?
I’d say my home leans more towards a maximalist vibe. It's full of personality, with lots of art, plants and various things. I love surrounding myself with stuff that can inspire me, though it can get a little chaotic at times. Overall, it has a cozy, warm atmosphere.
You're on a dessert island and in a weird turn of events there's some art supplies (hooray!) Would you rather have 1 marker and 100 sketch pages or 100 markers and 1 sketch page?

I’d go with one marker and 100 sketch pages! Having more space to work with lets me experiment, develop ideas, and create larger visual narratives. I could explore various techniques and patterns to make the most out of a single color.
Do you come from a creative family?
No, I’d say I’m the only one pursuing a creative path, while most of my family works in IT or other professions.
As a social media artist, how did it feel when you started to show people your work for the first time?

In the beginning, it was both exciting and stressful. I felt a mix of uncertainty and self-doubt, wondering if my work was good enough or if people would appreciate it. But as I started sharing, positive feedback and support from the community encouraged me to keep going, experiment more, and grow as an artist. Over time, I became more confident and learned to enjoy the process rather than worry about perfection.
If you could be an animal (other than human) for a day, what animal would you pick?
I'd probably choose to be a bird, maybe an eagle. The idea of soaring high, feeling the wind, and seeing the world from above sounds amazing.
Do you listen to music while creating? If so, what’s your go-to sound?

I enjoy listening to lo-fi or soothing music while creating, as it helps me stay relaxed and focused without distractions.
What’s your favourite day of the week?
I’d say Friday! It feels like a mix of accomplishment and excitement, with a sense of freedom on the horizon.
