Join us to learn all about Melbourne artist, Danielle Bergman (@texturesbydani). We asked her loads of questions about her artistic dreams and passions, and she came back with tonnes of insightful answers. Read on to get inspired!

What’s your creative process like? Do you prefer to plan it out or jump in and learn as you go?

I definitely jump right in! I’m incredibly impulsive. I get an itch to create and can’t concentrate on anything else until my need is met. My creations don’t always work but they’re all part of my journey. I also do a lot of experimenting with different textures on mini canvases.

How do you tackle art block? What gets you creating again?

I must admit I don't suffer from ‘art block’. I always have a lengthy list of paintings I want to try. Whether they are successful or not is another question. Everywhere I look I get inspired, whether it be by nature, colours or experiences.

How do you make time for creative projects?

I’m a mum to two daughters, 17 and 21. During school/business hours, I paint and teach textured art. After dinner, if my girls don’t need me, I work on my business and create content for social media. Even though running my own business takes up many more hours than a nine-to-five job, it's so rewarding. I’m grateful every day for my journey.

What art medium do you want to explore more?

I see myself as a texture artist. I just can’t get enough of anything and everything to create texture. I’d love to have a play with Plaster of Paris and plaster sheeting. I’d also love to experiment with crackle paste.

Who are your creative cheerleaders?

My biggest cheerleaders are my daughters. They could not be prouder of their mum! I followed my dream of working as an artist 3 years ago. I’m so happy they are emotionally invested in my journey, as I really wanted them to know anything is possible if you just give it a go. Not only do they share my content on social media, they are always around to sing my praises or say… “great job mum”.

What’s something that you’re proud of, that you don’t often get to talk about?

During lockdown, I took art classes online. Once I overcame my need for perfection and enjoyed the process, I created some beautiful pieces that are now in a folder tucked away. The only time I ever see them is when I’m on my camera roll. I’m so incredibly proud of what I achieved during this time. Not just the final art products but the immense inner growth as well.

What 3 art supplies would you take to the moon?

Easy! Modelling paste, structure paints and palette knives. Recently on holiday, I realised I just couldn't enjoy my trip without art supplies, so I snuck out to a craft store and bought these exact items!

Aside from art, what other hobbies do you enjoy?

My other creative love is macramé. Not only is it textural, but the creative options are also endless. I find creating with macrame similar to textured art, as both processes are very meditative. Both fill my soul with happiness. The largest macrame wall hanging I made was 3 metres long.

Do you have a fave memory or moment from art teaching?

I do! I had a beautiful couple come for a class a few months ago. The husband bought the workshop as a gift for his wife’s birthday. They chose to make a textural beach duo. One painted the left, the other painted the right. They were a matching pair made with love!

What' s your guilty pleasure?

Buying art supplies!!! Particularly anything that creates texture or is bright! I can never have enough. I even buy them on holidays!

Not sure about you, but we’re feeling ready to nourish our souls with creative freedom. Dani has taught us that finding a creative hobby that is both meditative and passion-driven can be extremely rewarding and maybe even change your life!
