Starry Night painting tutorial
Step 1: Crescent moon drawing
- Start by sketching an outline of the crescent moon on your canvas
Step 2: How to paint the moon
- Use a flat brush and Medium Yellow paint to fill in the moon
- Switch to Yellow Deep and make light, circular strokes around the moon
- Continue building textured strokes with a light hand
- Use your round brush to create similar strokes outside the moon
- Spread the strokes outward from the shape
Step 3: Adding depth to the moon
- Pick up Deep Cyan and continue with circular strokes around the moon
- Layer the strokes over each other to build texture, mimicking Van Gogh’s style
- Work your way all around the moon, blending as you go
- Return to your Medium Yellow and add strokes around the moon
- Blend lightly into the blue
- Use Lemon Yellow to brighten the area in and around the moon for added contrast
Step 4: How to paint starry night sky
- Apply Cerulean Blue in circular strokes around the moon
- Blend into the Deep Cyan
- Go back to Deep Cyan and blend the blues together with thick brush strokes
- Fill any empty spaces around the moon
- With a thin round brush and orange paint, create a subtle outline around the moon
- Use Yellow Deep to enhance the texture inside and around the moon
- Add a few strokes of blue along the moon’s edge for extra depth
Step 5: Finessing painting depth
- Apply Phthalo Blue using circular strokes to create darker tones around the painting
- Take a thick flat brush and Yellow Deep, creating circular strokes around the moon
- Build texture and movement
- Use various shades of yellow and blue to add more strokes
- Blend them into the Yellow Deep
